Our 10 year old neighbor Theo comes over quite a bit to hang out. We usually work on her homework, play games, or bake together. A few weeks ago she came over to get help with a fun science project: she had to make a torch (oh yeah, flashlight for all you Americans).
She and Jon drew plans and rummaged through several rubbish bins (oh yeah, trash cans? garbage cans? ... something like that) collecting bits and pieces. After several hours of fun (ahem, I mean work) they finally had a torch with a switch that easily turns on and off. She was so proud.
The torchAccording to Theo, when we go into production manufacturing these torches on a large scale we all get a share in the profits: she gets 50% for her effort and ideas, Jon gets 35% for his effort and ideas, and I get a measly 15% for helping add on the reflection cone and finding the hot glue gun (originally she was going to give me 5%... I drive a hard bargain).

So science projects are much the same there as here, except our snooty American selves would probably be aghast if our kids went rummaging through the trash for usable items. :) Cool torch!
