The trip went well and we have safely arrived. We didn't realize but our flight from New York to Johannesburg had a scheduled stop in Dakar, Senegal on the way over which made our time enroute around 18 hours. It was a long time to be sitting in one spot. We spent last night at a guest house in Johannesburg and then finished our trip off this morning with our flight to Gabs (short for Gaborone, the capitol of Botswana where we will live). As we walked off the tarmac and into the immigration area of the terminal it was so much fun to be able to pick out the wild laugh of KG, the 7 year old daughter of the family we stayed with when we visited in February. It felt so familiar and welcoming. We were met at the airport by a number of Flying Mission staff and their families who helped us get all of our bags (all of which made it, by the way) to our temporary housing. We are staying in a really nice little one bedroom guest flat (it is on the property of another FM staff member) until the end of the month and then, assuming we haven't found other housing by then, will be house sitting a different flat for the month of June. FM has provided a car for our use and we are finding our way around just fine. Dinner is at the chief pilot's house tonight and we are hoping and praying that we won’t fall asleep on them. Even though we haven’t had more than a couple hours of sleep in the past three days our plan is to force ourselves to stay awake all day so that we will sleep through the night tonight. No eye-rolling - this will be much harder to do than it sounds.
